Steve Scott is an American athlete who is one of the greatest milers in American history. The silver medallist in the 1,500 meters at the inaugural IAAF World Outdoor Championships at Helsinki in 1983, Scott owns the U.S. Outdoor mile record of 3:47.69 (1982) and U.S. Indoor records in the mile (3:51.8-1981) and 2000 meters (4:58.6-1981). Track & Field News ranked Scott #1 in the U.S. on 10 occasions, and 11 times during his career he was ranked in the top ten in the world by T&FN.
He ran 136 sub-4:00 miles in his career, more than any other runner in history.
Scott ran his first sub-4-minute mile at the Sunkist Invitational in Los Angeles in January 1977, his junior year in college. In the following year, he blossomed from an unknown college runner to an international miler, competing on both sides of the Atlantic. When he graduated with a degree in social ecology in 1978, Scott had already run 11 sub-4-minute miles. He went on to win the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials, but did not compete at the Moscow Olympic Games due to the U.S. boycott. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the 1988 Games in Seoul, he placed 10th and 5th respectively.
Since retiring from competition he has built one of the most successful NAIA collegiate programs in the country as Head Track and Cross Country Coach at Cal State San Marcos. He later received an OBE for his services to sport. In 2002, he was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. Steve has two sons, Corey (25) and Shawn (14), and a daughter Megan (23). He and his wife JoAnn live in Carlsbad, California.
Mark
Lauritzen—TreasurerMark Lauritzen is the Treasurer of the Spiering Family Foundation. Before joining the foundation, Mark served over 20 years in the Marine Corps as a pilot flying Fighter/Attack aircraft with tours aboard aircraft carriers and a stint with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels as a demonstration pilot. Before entering the Marine Corps, Mark earned his B.S. in Accounting from Mississippi State University. After retiring from the Marines, Mark returned home to succeed his father as the President & Chief Operating Officer of a family owned manufacturing business in Mississippi.
Mark resumed his flying career after 6 very successful years in the business world and the subsequent sale of his family's company. He moved to California in March 2000 to fly the Gulfstream IV aircraft for a privately owned publishing company in San Diego where he is now the Chief Pilot.
For many years, Mark has been a strong advocate, participant, and sponsor
of many public-racing events. He has planned and organized 5K & 10K run/walk
events in addition to completing one marathon race and several half-marathon
events. He has been active as a youth leader/teacher and director in his Mississippi
and California churches.
Mark is married and he and his wife are enjoying their empty nest in Carlsbad.
Their oldest son is serving in the U.S. Air Force and their other daughter
and son both work and attend school in San Diego County.

As secretary, Spiering Family Foundation, Lisa brings twenty years of vision,
knowledge, dedication, leadership, and tireless service in educational programs,
community politics, and service organizations.
During her undergraduate years as a political science major at Brigham Young University, Lisa interned for the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Washington, DC. Following graduation with a bachelors degree, Lisa served in Southern Brazil for 18 months, as a missionary, where she coordinated religious education programs. Lisa pursued graduate work in paralegal studies at the University of San Diego, and worked as a paralegal in San Diego and Hartford, Connecticut.
Lisa is a native Californian, born in San Francisco, and has resided in Southern California for 20 years with husband John; they have three children. Her hobbies include hiking, music, gardening and genealogical research.
Scott Karl is the Public Relations liaison for the Spiering Family Foundation.
He is a California native and graduated from Carlsbad High in 1989. As a student
athlete, Scott maintained a 3.89 GPA and his baseball accolades included:
Player of the Year 1989, League Champions 1989, 0.00 Earned Run Average -
1989.
Scott received a full baseball scholarship from the University of Hawaii where his major was financial accounting. During his junior season, with a 14-3 record, he was awarded Player of the Year for the Western Athletic Conference and 2nd team All-American. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1992. Scott was promoted to the Brewers opening day Major League Roster in 1995 and played almost 6 full years at the major league level. Spanning his career as a starting pitcher with the Brewers, Rockies, and Angels, Scott compiled more than 1000 innings, 50+ wins and 500+ strikeouts. He also has two home runs to his credit as a pitcher.
During his major league service, Scott served on the Major League Baseball Players Union Executive Committee for two years representing the Milwaukee Brewers Player Personnel. Throughout his career Scott was sponsored by Reebok, Addidas, Louisville Slugger, Wilson and No Fear Clothing Company.
Scott currently works for a subsidiary of Lehman Brothers. He is also the Executive Vice President of the Poinsettia Elementary PTA in Carlsbad, CA where he lives with his wife Dorrit of 7 years and their 2 daughters.
Scott and Ryn SpieringScott Spiering—Scott Spiering is the President and Chief Portfolio Manager of Anchor Bay Capital, Inc. Scott has worked in the financial services industry since 1987 and holds a full range of professional securities licenses. He has earned impressive returns for clients as a Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager for Prudential Securities and Vice President and Portfolio Manager for Kidder Peabody, and successfully matched a variety of corporations and high net worth individuals to independent money managers for Merrill Lynch.
Mr. Spiering has also had diverse life experiences including a combat tour in Vietnam and post-graduate work at the prestigious Brooks Institute. In addition, Mr. Spiering is a speaker and an author. His book, The Frugal Investor, has been helpful to thousands of investors all over the country.
Kathryn "Ryn" Spiering—Ryn Spiering is the former owner/manager of Crossroads Travel and the President of Poinsettia Elementary PTA. She is a former State Champion Gymnast and Junior Olympic Diver. When not supporting her children in their many athletic and academic pursuits, she volunteers for Junior Achievement/City Stuff for the City of Carlsbad.
Derek Boosey brings a broad range of experience and accomplishment to the Spiering Family Foundation. Derek studied in England both at Open University and Keele University, receiving a degree in education. Derek also served as an Airman in the British Royal Air Force.
An accomplished Triple Jumper, Derek Boosey competed in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. In addition, Derek attended nine Olympic games from 1968 - 2000, distinguishing himself as an athlete, promoter, coach, official observer, and consultant. An avid life-long athlete, Derek has competed in a number of masters competitions, receiving a gold medal at the 1998 World Masters Games, a Silver Medal at the 1987 World Championships, and bronze medals at the 1991 World Championships and 2005 World Masters Games.
Highly sought after for his extensive experience in marketing, management, and consulting, Derek has worked with Natural Alternatives International, Athletics Canada, and Nike International. During his work with Nike, Derek was the technical advisor for a number of national and international competitions including the 1986 Asian Games, the 1988 Olympics (Seoul), and the 1992 Olympics (Barcelona). In addition, Derek has held administrative and directorial positions for several institutions of higher learning, including Sussex University, Melbourne University, and the University of Newcastle.
Derek is an accomplished writer and has four published works; these works have been published in a number of countries including Canada, Korea, the Peoples Republic of China, and Australia. Derek is currently the Vice-President for Imagenetix, a leader in bioceutical innovation.
James Chinn joins the Spiering Family Foundation as a native of Tucson, Arizona. James graduated from Rincon High School, Tucson, Arizona in 1976. James received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arizona in 1981. James was a member of the University of Arizona track team.
James continues his athletic pursuits and in 2001, he entered the masters track competitions in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters. James is currently a four-time National Masters Champion. James is the 2005 Masters World Champion in the 400 meters, 45-49 age group.
In 1987, James established a private architectural practice in Del Mar, California. He is also the assistant track coach at Cal State San Marcos.
Thomas (T.C.) Wardle is a Director of the Spiering Family Foundation. Tom was born and raised in Los Angeles, having moved to the San Diego area in 1993 to further his banking and finance career. He is currently working as a Senior Vice President/Asst. Chief Credit Administrator for Temecula Valley Bank.
Tom began competing in track and field since the age of five and organized football at the age of seven. At Chatsworth High School, he was a 3-sport letterman (football, track, basketball) and a Blue-Chip All-American wide receiver. In track, he led the team in scoring for three consecutive years and was named captain in his senior season.
At Pomona College, Tom continued to excel in both Football and Track, earning (football) Division III All-American honors in both his freshman and senior seasons. In track, he was a member of one of Pomona Colleges most successful track and field programs, helping the team go undefeated (12-0) in 1987 in both invitational and dual meet competition. He would compete in up to eight events per meet. He was also a member of the NCAA Championship Silver-medal winning 4x400m relay team, earning All-American honors in 1987.
Passing on a career in professional football, Tom continued to run and, on occasion, compete in track meets throughout the West Coast. In 1992, he ran what he considered at the time to be his final track meet at the University of Oregon (Eugene), running a personal best 46.87 seconds in the 400 meters.
In 1988, he became involved with the Northridge Pacers youth track and field program in Granada Hills, CA. By 1990, he was appointed Head Coach and Athletic Director of the program, helping to advocate their strong body/sound mind philosophy to youth athletes throughout the San Fernando Valley.
Upon moving to San Diego in 1993, Tom spent the next twelve years as a member of a number of semi-pro football programs as well as a national championship flag-football team. In 2005, Tom hung up the football cleats for good and began training and competing in Masters track and field (200m/400m events).
Tom is married (Lena Lopez) and currently resides in San Marcos, CA with their daughter Jordan (6) and son Devin (4).
